The Tucson Herpetological Society (THS) established the Jarchow Conservation Award (JCA) in July 1992 to honor individuals or organizations for their service to the conservation of the amphibians and reptiles of the deserts of North America.
The award is named for James L. Jarchow, DVM, of Tucson (above, preparing a Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake for surgery) for his dedication and contributions to the conservation of amphibians and reptiles for more than 40 years. The first JCA was given to Dr. Jarchow on 15 September 1992.
This fourteenth Jarchow Conservation Award is made to
– Dale S. Turner –
16 November 2026
For his lifetime of conservation advocacy, research, land stewardship, and habitat restoration for the biodiversity of the Sonoran Desert and Sky Islands. Dale’s scientific contributions alone have made him one of the region’s most respected herpetologists. In addition to his years of conservation planning with the Nature Conservancy, Dale has been a powerful advocate for reptiles and amphibians with the Tucson Herpetological Society, Earth First!, Sky Island Alliance, Sierra Club, and on his own. He is currently saving reptiles and amphibians by leading efforts to fill in abandoned mines as Conservation Chair of THS.
